Eastern Caribbean Study 2016

The study used a framework developed by UNICEF and UNESCO Institute of Statistics (UIS) as part of a Global Initiative on Out-of-school Children designed to help support a systematic analysis to identify the bottlenecks to universal primary education and explain why well-intentioned policies were not yielding the expected results. The tools and methodologies developed in this regard were used to inform and guide this Out-of-School Children Study in the Eastern Caribbean in an attempt to assess the scope of and reasons for any exclusion.

Cambodia Country Study 2016

The Cambodia study is the result of intensive collaboration between UNICEF, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) and the UNESCO Institute of Statistics. The study analyses the proportion of children who are out of school and those at risk of dropping out, it also discusses the supply and demand-side factors affecting their participation in education including national sector policies, governance and financing and the dynamic relationship between push and pull factors affecting children’s attendance and learning.

Monitoring Education Participation

An estimated 61 million children of primary-school age, 60 million young adolescents of lower-secondary school age and 142 million of upper secondary age are out of school, based on the latest figures as of 2016. The children who are not enrolled in school are often those from the most socially marginalized communities, including children with disabilities, children from ethnic-minority communities, children excluded because of gender barriers and children living in extreme poverty. All of these children have the right to education and are currently being deprived of that right. Moreover, education – including high-quality pre-school – benefits not just the individuals themselves, but also society, such as in terms of lower unemployment, reduced criminality, more social cohesion, higher tax revenues, and lower public health and welfare expenditures.

Understanding the Processes of Educational Exclusion within 15 to 20 Year Old Population

This document aims to study the educational exclusion of adolescents and young people between the ages from 15 to 20 in the Latin America and the Caribbean region; to know and understand these processes in order to back up the design and implementation of important public policies for the attainment of a full inclusion. In the concerned segment of the population, being out-of-school involves various and heterogeneous situations, since within the group of adolescents who do not attend school, there is also a variety of previous schooling pathways and life experiences. Outlining the profile of their situation of exclusion, approaching the characterization of barriers against full schooling, and identifying the policies that contribute to overcome these barriers, it all raises a complex and specific challenge.

Development of Alternatives for Estimating Population Demand on the Educational System by Simple Age

During the last decades of the twentieth century most of the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have approached – through diverse policies – the goal of universal primary education. Based on these achievements, they have progressively emphasized policies towards the extension of compulsory education (Initial and Secondary levels). Despite these efforts, the coverage estimates of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics realize a visible decrease in the levels of school coverage mainly in the group of primary-school age population. According to the statistics released by the organization, the number of out-of-school boys and girls for primary level would have increased from 2.7 to 4.1 million between 2002 and 2013.

Out-of-School Children in Ukraine 2016

This report outlines the results of the survey “Out of School Children in Ukraine – A Study on the Scope and Dimensions of the Problem with Recommendations for Action”, which was conducted in January 2016 by GfK Ukraine, with the support of the UNICEF Country Office in Ukraine. The necessity of this study was determined by the impact of internal migration from the non-government controlled areas (NGCA) to other regions of Ukraine, on the education system, as well as by the lack of complex data on IDP access to school in the areas of settlement.

The Impact of Five Years of War on Syria’s Children and their Childhoods

Every Syrian child under the age of five has known nothing but a lifetime shaped by war – that’s an estimated 2.9 million children inside Syria and at least 811,000 in neighbouring countries. Addressing the needs and rights of all children affected by this conflict is essential if we are to avoid the loss of an entire generation, and decades of development progress. Any child who has lived through the last five years will never know the Syria their parents remember. Today, more than ever, it is a children’s crisis. More than eight million children inside Syria and in neighbouring countries are in need of assistance.
